Meet Andy Fletcher

ndy Fletcher's career as an artist started early. He began drawing trains—one of his first loves—from his own photos when he was still in school. .All of his drawings are done by hand with a pencil and watercolor pens.Andy's first engine to draw was BN's 1991 "DESERT STORM" SD60M. Then in 1992, Burlington Northern Railroad asked him to design their popular SD70MAC Executive color scheme. Altogether, Andy has drawn over 2,000 trains, from steam to modern diesel and cars, cabooses and other equipment. He has been commissioned to paint trains for railroads, railroad historical societies and museums. Andy has epilepsy and was unable to draw from 2001-2007. During his hiatus from drawing trains, he did some watercolor paintings, but as soon as he was able, he came back to trains. People often ask, “Why trains?” and the answer is he just loves them. He feels rewarded by the joy his drawings have brought others.

Andy began drawing heritage locomotives for America's Class 1 Railroads in 2010. His love of historic railroads and the memories they hold for so many railroad families, railfans and the public motivated him to travel America and draw many of American's Fallen Flag railroads. On January 4, 2012 Andy send Norfolk Southern's CEO Wick Moorman a poster and letter in support of doing a series of Norfolk Southern's heritage railroads. On January 20 Andy received a call from Norfolk Southern that they were going to paint heritage engines and requested him to send his renderings to use in painting a series of locomotives. In a rare historic railroading event at the North Carolina Transportation Museum Norfolk Southern displayed all twenty NS Heritage locomotives. The event was attended by 4,000+ vistors in Spencer, NC. Trains Magazine has published a special edition issue, "Norfolk Southern's Heritage Power" with photos of the event, a story about Andy Fletcher, and photos and stories about the process of painting the twenty NS heritage locomotives. Andy's love of trains keeps him drawing every chance he can and his friends on Facebook and followers on Twitter often get a chance to see his most recent drawings.
